On Friday 18th October the 2nd years went on a trip to Newport where we visited the city’s Museum and Art Gallery to kick off our live brief project in Newport. We were given a tour of the museum by Annette Wells, the Museum officer, who explained that the museum was celebrating its 125 year anniversary since opening in 1888. We were given a tour of the Reference Library by Alex Jarvis, the Reference Librarian, who showed us the extensive archives housed in the library.
From the Wing of a Fly by Matt White
Film Screening Premier (free entry)
Tuesday, 29 October 2013 from 20:00 to 22:00
From the Wing of a Fly is created from a large body of research undertaken between 2009 and 2010 that included a field trip to North East Turkey during the spring of 2010. My task was to track down the first tulip, still in existence, to be cultivated for human pleasure. The resulting work is made up of two intermingled voice-overs generated from text written in situ, interviews with local people as well as video footage of Istanbul and the area north of Erzurum. It utilises the historical shifts in the cultural and economic importance of the tulip as a backdrop for a narrative work that raises questions about love, place, intervention, economic survival, social responsibility and rural tourism.
