On Wednesday 9th October, tutor Magali Nougarede organised a 1st year trip to introduce them to the Bristol art scene. The day kicked off with a visit to the Clifton Observatory and it’s amazing Camera Obscura.

After a quick lunch out on the terrace of the Avon Gorge Hotel, looking out over the suspension bridge, we all headed down the hill to Spike Island to see the New Contemporaries Exhibition, featuring work by Photoart alumni, Josephine Sowden (Graduate 2012). Whilst there we were also met by another Photoart alumni, Tom Ketteringham (2010), who is currently one of the technical managers at Spike and responsible for installing all of the hugely ambitious shows there. After this, tutors Matt White and Peter Bobby took us backstage to see their studios.

From Spike, we walked along the river into the city centre, quickly popping in on the excellent printers Hello Blue on the way. Next we saw the 2012 Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at M Shed, visited the fantastic bookshop at Arnolfini, then finished the day with a visit to the Architecture Centre to see a new exhibition by Photoart programme leader, Peter Bobby.

All in all, a very busy and fruitful day.
